Cars In Rochester Area Hit By Ice Chunks, Possibly Thrown: Sheriff

Police believe someone was throwing chunks of ice​​ at vehicles that were driving in Rochester Hills over the past few days.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — Police believe someone was throwing chunks of ice at vehicles that were driving in the Rochester Hills area over the past few days, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said multiple vehicles driving on or near Tienken Road were damaged after a chunk of ice hit their car.

Michael Rota told WXYZ his car was hit by an ice chunk that forced him to serve onto the shoulder of Tienken Road while driving back from the post office.

"I saw the arm, I didn't see the ice being thrown, but I saw the arm," Rota told the news station.

Police have not identified any suspects and do not know if the cars were targeted.

Here are the other incidents, according to the sheriff’s office:

  • A 70-year-old Rochester Hills man said he was driving on West Tienken Road near Brewster Road on Feb. 3 at around 9 p.m., when someone in another vehicle threw a chunk of ice at his 2017 Ford Escape, causing damage to the grille and hood.
  • A 21-year-old Rochester Hills man said he was driving eastbound on Tienken Road on Feb. 4 at around 11:27 a.m. when a block of ice struck and smashed the windshield of his 2022 Tesla Model 3. The suspect was reportedly traveling in another vehicle, headed westbound on Tienken Road.
  • A 32-year-old Washington Township man said he was driving southbound on Adams Road, south of Dutton, on Feb. 4 at around 8:43 p.m. when he heard something hit the front driver’s side quarter panel of his 2020 Chevrolet Malibu. He didn’t immediately stop, but later noticed a football-sized dent in the vehicle.
  • A 22-year-old Rochester Hills woman said she was driving westbound on Tienken, west of Livernois, on Feb. 5 at around 10:39 a.m. when the windshield of her 2019 GMC Terrain was smashed. She had been passed by a pickup truck and believes a chunk of ice was thrown at her car.

Anyone with information that leads to an arrest was asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-800 SPEAK UP. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
