Community Garden Takes Shape, Adds Drinking Fountain

Rochester Hills’ first community garden has started to take shape at Wabash Park with the support of volunteers and community organizations. 

The Rochester Rotary assisted with both donating funds to install a drinking fountain and by getting their hands a little dirty to help with the build out, according to a news release from the group.

“The community garden at Wabash Park will be a great enhancement to the park and the drinking fountain is a much-needed amenity for those who gather for gardening and recreation,” Mayor Bryan K. Barnett said in the news release. “We appreciate everyone who has supported this project by giving their time and talent.”

Community gardens have become a welcome outdoor activity for residents of all ages. The ability to garden locally offers nutritious, high quality food for residents and their families. It also allows the city another chance to give back to community kitchens and those in need. 

“The Rochester Hills Community Garden provides a great educational tool for youngsters to learn about nature and the importance of community and stewardship,” Rochester Rotarian Jerry Carvey said in the news release.   

The community is invited to rent their own piece of the garden. Plot rental fees are $30 per year for residents and $35 for non-residents. Applications are available online at dinosaurhills.org or by calling 248-656-0999.
