METRO DETROIT, MI —Fortune Magazine is out with its coveted Fortune 500 list for 2017 and of the companies on the list, which represent two-thirds of the United States GDP with $12 trillion in revenues, 17 of them are based in Michigan.

Companies are ranked by total revenues and topping the list nationally is Walmart, followed by Berkshire Hathaway and Apple. Walmart is also the biggest employer on the list with 2.3 million employees while Apple is the most profitable company on the list.

While 15 companies dropped off the list, there were 20 newcomers on the list, including Elon Musk’s electric car company Tesla. Other than clearing the bar of at least $5.1 billion in annual revenue, Fortune explains how newcomers make it on the list.
