Road crews began installing "mumble strips" in several Oakland County communities Wednesday.

The road work will happen on roughly 12 miles of road, including Orion Road in Lake Orion Village, Orion Township, Oakland Township and Rochester Hills and the Dixie Highway in Springfield Township.

Work will start on Orion Road, from Rochester Road to Flint Street/Miller Road/Orion Road. Workers will direct traffic with flaggers during the project, and drivers should expect some delays.

Once that's completed, crews will move to Dixie Highway from Oak Hill Road to Davisburg Road.

Road crews will work outside of peak traffic hours. The Dixie Highway will remain open, but drivers can expect moving inside lane closures.

Officials expect crews will finish the work by mid-October, weather permitting.

Officials said mumble strips are similar to rumble strips, which alert drivers when they cross the centerline. The difference, however, is that mumble strips are quieter and reduce noise disturbance for nearby residents.

The strips do still create a similar interior sound to keep drivers alert, officials said.

Officials said the mumble strips will help enhance safety on the roads.

"Alerting drivers that they have crossed the center line is important because center-line crossover crashes are the most common type of serious-injury and fatality crashes on Michigan’s roads," the Oakland County Road Commission said.

The project will cost roughly $151,000 and is being funded through a federal safety grant.
