For her Gold Award, Palmer created a seed library for Brandon Township Public Library. The library is a free resource for the Ortonville & Brandon communities.

Palmer implemented a seed drive, made indoor seed growing kits, organized and labeled over 700 seed packets with the help of her team, made three educational brochures and conducted a public presentation at the library.

Brandon Township Library patrons can take up to 10 seed packets consisting of fruits, veggies, herbs and flowers. Patrons are encouraged, but not required, to return some harvested seeds each year to help the library continue to be self-sustaining. Donations are also accepted.

Seed libraries encourage biodiversity and help combat seed monocultures which threaten the world’s food supply. There are 130 seed libraries in Michigan and 600 nationwide.

Palmer plans to pursue a college degree in environmental science this fall at Brigham Young University and hopes to contribute to the world and scientific community through research.
