Shelby Twp. Police Officer Remembered As 'Respected And Revered'

Sgt. Daniel Kammerzell, 51,​ was found unresponsive in his police car and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI — A Shelby Township Police Sergeant unexpectedly died Saturday in his police car while on duty, police said.

Sgt. Daniel Kammerzell, 51, was found unresponsive in his police car and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, the department said.

Officials did not give a cause of death, but don't believe there was any foul play, the department said.

As an 18-year veteran of the department, officials described Kammerzell as a decorated officer, who took various assignments in the department including evidence technician, field training officer, detective, range instructor, training coordinator, founding member and assistant team leader of the Shelby Township Tactical Response Unit.

He also was a member of Metro Macomb SWAT, the department said.

Before joining the Shelby Township Police Department, he worked for the Detroit Police Department and was a United States Marine Corps veteran.

"Sgt. Kammerzell always came to work in a great mood; cracking jokes and making everyone laugh," the department said in a statement. "We thank you, Sergeant Kammerzell, for your dedication to this community. Rest in peace, brother. You will be greatly missed."

His family is requesting privacy and time to mourn his passing.
