ROYAL OAK, MI — A 4-year-old lion is leaving the Detroit Zoo, park officials announced Monday.

Binti's move is recommended to promote the health, genetic diversity and overall sustainability of lion populations in zoos, according to park officials.

"Saying goodbye is always bittersweet – especially for an animal that has such a special bond with our animal care staff," park officials said in a statement. "Though she will be missed at the Detroit Zoo, we’re excited for all that awaits Binti in this next adventure."
Binti was born to parents Simba and Asha on Sept. 10, 2020, and had to be hand-raised because of complications that occurred during her mother's labor, according to park officials.

Over the years, she has grown and thrived to become a healthy, well-socialized lion at the zoo, according to park officials.
As Binti leaves the zoo, park officials said a new lion would be coming in to join the other lions, Asha and Amirah, in the habitat. Officials are expected to announce more details and updates about the new lion on though social media.
