Detroit Zoo Welcomes New Baby Chimpanzee

ROYAL OAK, MI — The Detroit Zoo has a new addition.

Nyani, a 34-year-old chimpanzee, gave birth to her first baby, a healthy girl, on July 4, zoo officials said.

Zoo officials said the baby chimp and her mom are doing well as they adjust to this new chapter together.

For now, zoo officials said they’re bonding behind the scenes and gradually being introduced to the rest of the chimpanzee troop.

Mom and baby will have access to the public areas of their habitat when animal care staff determines they’re ready, zoo officials said.

Zoo officials did not release the baby chimp’s name.
