Gilda's Family Walk Adds 5K Run in Royal Oak

Gilda's Club Metro Detroit brings its annual walk to Royal Oak for the first time and adds an event for runners, too.

Whether you walk, jog or run, you can make a difference to families touched by cancer at the 2013 Gilda's Family Walk & Run on Oct. 12 in Royal Oak.

"We really want to involve the whole community," said Donetta Behen, Gilda's Club Metro Detroit board member.

After years of hosting the Gilda's Family Walk & Health Fair in Southfield, the event, now in its 20th year, is coming home to Royal Oak, said Behen. A new 5K run has been added, too.

"The walk/run will start at Royal Oak High School and go through neighborhoods and past Gilda's Club," Behen said. "The clubhouse will be the half-way point."

If they wish, walkers, joggers and runners can take tours of Gilda's Club during the event and see all that goes on behind the red door at 3517 Rochester Rd.

Behen, who co-owns Salon Cardon in Royal Oak, is putting together her own team to participate, which includes stylists and clients.

"Our clients love the fact that they are giving back to the community," Behen said.
