Hamlin Corner Asks Commission to Approve Last-Minute Changes Before May 23 Opening

Royal Oak Police do not object to requests for a second sidewalk cafe and DJ stand.

With its grand opening just a couple of weeks away, Hamlin Corner is seeking the approval of the Royal Oak City Commission to tweak its plan of operation.

The 6,700-square-foot restaurant/bar, which is set to open on May 23, is asking to add a second sidewalk café seating area with seven tables and 16 seats on Main Street and to place an elevated disc jockey stand next to its dance floor. A 20-seat outdoor patio, also on Main Street, was previously approved.

The Royal Oak Police Department has no objections to Hamlin Corner’s request.

“Our experience with restaurant sidewalk cafes has been positive and the police department expends minimal resources on their supervision,” wrote Deputy Chief Gordon Young in a memo to commissioners.

Additionally, Hamlin Corner is proposing to enclose its outdoor seating areas with concrete planter boxes instead of the required 30-inch metal railing. Hamlin Corner says it also plans to install benches, more concrete planter boxes, a bicycle rack, and cigarette receptacles on E. University Avenue.
