Home Construction Site Changes Eyed By Royal Oak
After numerous complaints by residents, City Commissioners will vote Monday on changes to rules on home sites under construction.
ROYAL OAK, MI — City Commissioners will vote Monday on proposed changes to a Royal Oak ordinance that would require builders to be more conscientious about work sites. City leaders have received numerous complaints about debris, litter, muddy sidewalks and more from homes and other buildings under construction.
Changes would place builders under tighter restrictions. Construction sites would have to have a four-foot high fence with a top rail, for example. The Royal Oak City Commission will vote Monday on the proposed changes and they could into effect as early as next month.
“I’ve heard just one awful story after another” from residents about building sites, said City Commissioner Dave Poulton said. “It’s one of the biggest issues in the city. I’d like to see strict enforcement and if they are not in compliance the city will start writing tickets.”
Builders will have to get a city permit for any work that encroaches on the right-of-way or adjoining sidewalk. Dirt or debris on the right-of-way has to be cleaned up daily and trees protected with a protective screening.
Portable toilets will have to located on the site no less than 15 feet from any existing structure on nearby property.
