Main Street Closed in Royal Oak Friday Night

Royal Oak is shutting down Main Street to cars on Friday, May 26, to encourage exploration of local businesses, restaurants and bars.

ROYAL OAK, MI — For the second time in less than a month, Royal Oak is shutting down Main Street to cars. On Friday, May 26, Main Street will be closed to traffic from 6 - 10 p.m. between 11 Mile Road and Fourth Street.

The idea is to encourage exploration of local businesses, restaurants and bars. City officials say the “car-free safe zone” is open to musicians and street performers, too. New this week, Oakland County will provide a recreation climbing wall.

Where to Park: There will be no meter parking on Main Street between 11 Mile Road and Fourth Street and the surface lots near the U.S. Post Office (to the south and east) are closed for construction. Visitors can always find safe and clean parking in Royal Oak's three parking structures. The Center Street deck is open. Look here for maps of parking options.

City officials say bicycles are always welcome in downtown but ask that, for the safety of others, to walk your wheels on public sidewalks in the Central Business District.
