Man Charged In Deadly Royal Oak Apartment Shooting: Police

The victim was a maintenance worker at the apartment complex, police said.

ROYAL OAK, MI — A Royal Oak man is facing a murder charge in connection with a shooting that left one dead last week, according to police.

Gregory Hill, 65, of Southfield, was shot to death in the parking lot at Devon Park Apartments near 13 Mile Road and Crooks in Royal Oak last Thursday, according to police.

Nathaniel Joshua-Olsen Rockwell, 32, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, three counts of felony firearm and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

He was placed in jail and denied bond. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 11. Police noted that Rockwell has no prior criminal convictions.

Police said Rockwell got into a fight with another tenant at the apartment complex. During the altercation, police said Rockwell ran to his car and grabbed a handgun. As the other tenant ran away, Rockwell turned his attention toward Hill, who was in the area but not directly involved in the dispute, police said.

Police said Hill was killed in the shooting. He was a maintenance worker at the apartment complex and was on duty at the time of the shooting, police said.

Officers quickly arrested Rockwell in connection with the shooting without further incident, police said.

"This was a senseless act of horrific violence. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," said Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore. "Thankfully, due to the swift actions of our officers, the suspect was apprehended quickly before he could harm anyone else."
