New Panels of Community Mosaic Project Unveiled

The unveiling includes an opportunity for children and adults like to create their own mini mosaic that they can take home with them.

In an ongoing joint initiative, the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and Royal Oak Public Library will unveil the latest panels of a community created art project in the Library’s Youth Area on Wednesday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. All area residents are invited to attend.

“The Path to Imagination” mosaic is made up of broken shards of artwork donated by over 100 artists who participated in the annual Chamber-sponsored Clay, Glass & Metal Show. Two panels are created during the June weekend event, assembled by festival attendees and volunteer artists under the guidance of Diana Barrar, a local artist’s assistant. The first set of panels was created in 2010. This will be the third set, continuing a path that will eventually encircle the Library’s entire Youth area.

Local ceramic artists Marcia Hovland and Laurie Eisenhardt designed and oversaw the creation of the mosaic panels with both the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of the Royal Oak Public Library supporting the project.  At the conclusion of the Clay, Glass & Metal Show, these artists donate their time and materials to complete the panels and add necessary grouting.
