Popular Oakland County Hardware Store Closing After 90 Years

ROYAL OAK, MI — A well-known Oakland County hardware store is closing after 90 years in business.

Frentz and Sons Hardware, which has been a cornerstone on Main Street in Royal Oak since 1932, announced Thursday they are putting their building and property up for sale.

While the family said the decision to close the store is personal, they did point to some economic realities, such as rising costs and "the challenges of running a small business in today’s environment."

"We’ve always prided ourselves on having what you need, especially regarding the unique hardware and knowledge that older homes require," the staff said in a social media post. "But more than that, we’ve been proud to know so many of you by name, help with your projects big and small, and be a trusted neighbor in the community we love so much."
