Royal Oak High Students Get First Responder Training

About 40 students will participate in a "mass casualty exercise," which will simulate a severe weather event.

ROYAL OAK, MI — Royal Oak High School students will get an upclose look at how first responders do their jobs on Tuesday. About 40 students will participate in a “mass casualty exercise,” which will simulate a severe weather event. The training exercise will run from 9 - 11 a.m. at the high school.

The Royal Oak Police and Fire departments will be conducting the mass casualty exercise along with Beaumont Hospital. This year’s event will allow students from the high school’s Medical Skills Class to get realistic, real world training, according to organizers.

Police and Fire personnel will use the training to coordinate response, evacuation, and transportation of simulated casualties to the hospital. The scenario will continue at Beaumont Hospital – Royal Oak, where role-players will be assessed and treated.

This coordinated effort will provide emergency medical personnel and first responders with valuable training to fine-tune their skills responding to a mass casualty incident. The students will have the opportunity to get a firsthand look at how a large scale incident is coordinated and managed by our emergency professionals.
