Royal Oak Police HQ Plans Move Forward
If ultimately approved by the Royal Oak City Commission, groundbreaking could come next year.

ROYAL OAK, MI. — A new Royal Oak police department headquarters recently moved one step closer to reality. The city planning commission gave the $15 million, 45,000-square-foot facility site plan approval on June 13. If ultimately approved by the city commission, ground-breaking would likely take place in 2018 adjacent to the district court house.
“We think it is a very nice complement to the other architecture in the area, and we looked at a lot of different ways to present this in terms of how can it look a lot like the court, or how can it not look like the court, and obviously we kind of went in a direction that it stands on its own, but also is very complementary to the court building and makes a presence for the police,” said David Gassen, Partners in Architecture project principal.
Other building features include a green roof with a sustainable roof system; smart glass that is programmable using GPS data to determine the intensity of the sun to make adjustments to interior heating and cooling; and planters placed across the front that would be aesthetically pleasing, but are in the design plans to serve as a crash barrier and to perform other security measures.
