Royal Oak Police Stop SUV After 22-Minute Chase

Farmington Hills woman leads police on long chase down Woodward Avenue.

ROYAL OAK, MI — A 50-year-old Farmington Hills woman is facing multiple charges after leading Royal Oak Police on a chase through several communities. Satira Marie Kitchen was arraigned on counts of fleeing and eluding, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license and open alcohol in a vehicle at the 44th District Court.

A Royal Oak Police officer responded to the area of Woodward Avenue and Coolidge Road on a possible intoxicated driver in the early morning hours of April 21. Kitchen, who was driving a black SUV, was spotted traveling south on Woodward Avenue. A Royal Oak officer attempted to stop the vehicle near Woodward at Webster Road, but Kitchen continued south on Woodward.

Police officers from Berkley and Huntington Woods then joined the pursuit. Moments later, a second Royal Oak officer used a tire deflation device on the SUV as it headed south on Woodward near Lincoln Avenue. Kitchen’s front tires were blown out but she kept going, according to police reports.

Her SUV ranged in speed from 29 to 53 mph during the 22-minute pursuit. After driving through Ferndale, Detroit and Highland Park, RoyalOak officers were able to box in the SUV on Woodward near Sears Street in Highland Park.

Kitchen refused to get out of her vehicle. Officers broke the SUV’s passenger door window and removed her from the SUV without further incident. Police reports said a half full bottle of whiskey was found on the passenger seat of the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Kitchen received a $10,000/ no ten percent bond at her arraignment. She was scheduled to appear at the district court on Friday.
