Royal Oak's Upton Elementary Garden Club Wins Award

ROYAL OAK, MI — Upton Elementary’s Garden Club was recently honored at the Michigan Green Schools Award Ceremony, which was held at the Detroit Zoo.

The Garden Club students began the day with an engaging scavenger hunt around the zoo, combining fun with environmental education.

Following their adventure, the students attended the statewide awards ceremony, where Upton Elementary was officially recognized as an Emerald School, which is a distinction awarded to schools that complete 15 or more environmentally sustainable actions throughout the school year.

The projects included student-led gardening projects, recycling programs and energy conservation initiatives.

"We are so proud of the Upton Garden Club and the entire school community for their dedication to environmental stewardship," Upton Elementary Principal John Grzywack said. "Being named an Emerald School is a testament to the meaningful, hands-on learning experiences our students engage in throughout the year."

The Michigan Green Schools program encourages schools across the state to promote environmental responsibility through practical, student-centered initiatives. Upton’s recognition highlights the district’s continued pursuit of excellence, sustainability and innovation.
