Bastien, Roemer Lead Hornets Past Kicking Mules

Saline opened the dual meet season by winning all but one event.

Steven Bastien won three events and Garrick Roemer won two individual events and helped two relay teams to victory as the Saline Hornets easily outpaced the Bedford Kicking Mules, 115-22 Tuesday.

Tuesday’s meet at Saline was the season’s first dual meet and outdoor event.

“I feel as a team it was a very good showing especially coming off of spring break 2 days earlier,” said coach Allan Leslie.

Saline won all but the 400 meter dash.

Roemer jumped 6’2 to win the high jump and ran a 40.9 straight into headwind to win 300 meter hurdles. He also ran great legs to help his team win the 800 and 1,600 relays.

Steven Bastien leaped 21 feet to win the long jump, won the high hurdles in 16.33 seconds, and won the pole vault, clearing 13 feet. Leslie said he came very close to matching the school record of 14 feet.

Tyler Villa was a double winner, too. He took the shot put (46’3 ½) and the discus (120’6). Andrew Barnett was also a double winner, taking the 1,600 (4:31) and 3,200 (9:56).

Roel Galinato won the 100 dash, finishing in 12.01. Payton Hardy won the 200 dash in 23.57. Matthew Elms won the 800 in 2:04.

Saline won the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Leslie managed to get all 126 team members into the competition Tuesday.

“(Everyone) got a chance to compete and, overall, did a nice job,” he said.

The Hornets split up Saturday to compete at the Ypsilanti April Showers meet and the Milford Invitational, where the boys and girls teams compete together.

“It’s a nice meet because the boys and girls race and compete together so the strength of the both programs comes into play,” Leslie said. “We have been very successful at the meet, winning it three of the four years we have been invited.”
