SALINE, MI — Sherrone Moore, Michigan football's former head coach, was jailed Wednesday, court records said, the same day he was fired from his coaching job due to an “inappropriate relationship,” according to the university.

According to the Washtenaw County Jail, 39-year-old Moore was booked into the facility as of Wednesday evening. The jail's records did not provide any information about why Moore was detained or whether any court appearances were scheduled.

Saline police found and detained Moore, then turned him over to Pittsfield police “for investigation into potential charges,” the Saline Police Department told ESPN in a statement.

The Pittsfield Police Department released information Wednesday night about an assault investigation. The department did not include any names in its news release but did cite "multiple media requests for information." The incident occurred shortly after 4:10 p.m. in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road in Pittsfield Township, according to police.

"A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community," the news release said. "The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.

"At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible."

Moore was fired following a university investigation that revealed evidence of his relationship with a staff member, which “constitutes a clear violation of University policy,” the school wrote in a statement.

The team announced Biff Poggi as interim coach.

Moore just finished his second season and led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record. They finished No. 18 in the College Football Playoff rankings. They will play the Texas Longhorns in Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Moore, who replaced Jim Harbaugh, went 18-8 as the team's coach.
