Defending Champs Open Season With Victory at Huron Relays
The Saline girls' swim and dive team won five of the eight swimming events at Ann Arbor Huron Thursday.
The 2011 Saline Hornets girls swim and dive team started its title defense in fine form, defeating tough competition at the Ann Arbor Huron Relays Thursday night.
Saline finished with 478 points, 78 more than Northville and more than a 100 more than Ann Arbor Huron and Ann Arbor Skyline.
All of the swimming events were relays. The Hornets won five of the eight swimming relays. Saline also placed second twice and third once.

Saline won the 200-yard medley, the 400-yard freestyle, the 400-yard medley, the 200-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard freestyle.
Coach Todd Brunty said he was a little surprised at how well his girls swam.

“I knew we had a strong team. But you come out to an event like this against these other top programs and you wonder how you’ll do, with so many girls swimming in new roles. I am kind of surprised at how well did,” Brunty said. “I think the thing that impresses me most is how much these girls were ready to compete. This was a great way to start the season.”
The Hornets opened the day with a victory in the 200-yard medley. Serana Yan, Cristina Czyrka, Paige Sieffert and Maddy Frost finished in 151.20, almost two seconds faster than South Lyon.
In the 400-yard freestyle, Alex McPherson, Melanie Schroeder, Hanna Lau and Nikki Flynn finished in 3:41.05, nearly 1.5 seconds faster than second place Northville.
In the 400-yard medley, Emily Lau, Cristina Czyrka, Serena Yan and Kate Rogers finished in 4:07.31, a whopping 16.4 seconds faster than second place Ann Arbor Skyline.
The Hornets made it four-for-four in the pool in the 200-yard butterfly. Paige Sieffert, Alex McPherson, Nikki Flynn and Emily Lau finished in 1:50.64 to win the event, beating Northville by 1.3 seconds.
Saline went the next three events in the pool without a victory. Ann Arbor Huron won the 200-yard backstroke, beating Saline with a meet-record time of 1:50.37. The record was set by Annie Tamblyn, Jesse Gargan, Samadhi Kiridena and Anna DeMonte. The Huron team defeated Saline by a shade less than 1.5 seconds. Maddy Frost, Serena Yan, Paige Sieffert and Hannah Lau finished in 1:51.84.
In the 800-yard freestyle, Saline finished behind South Lyon and Ann Arbor Skyline. Swimming to a third place finish were Melanie Schroeder, Alex McPherson, Sara Noonan and Erika Glatz.
The Hornets were second to Skyline in a phenomenal race in the 200-yard breaststroke. One observer called it a race between two of the best teams in the country. Both Skyline and Saline broke the old meet record of 2:08.77. Skyline won the race in 2:06.35, edging Saline’s 2:06.58.
Racing for Skyline were Lexie Beemer, Ashleigh Shanley, Susie Stevens and Shannon Cowley. Kate Rogers, Sammy Richart, Emily Lau and Cristina Czyrka raced for the Hornets.
Saline returned to its winning ways in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle. Maddy Frost, Melanie Schroeder, Nikki Flynn and Katie Rogers finished in 1:38.34, nearly three seconds faster than second place South Lyon.
While happy with the performance, coach Brunty said his team had a lot of work to do.
“We’ll go back and watch tape and work on some things. We started well, but we’ve got a lot of room for improvement,” Brunty said.
Diving results were incomplete.
