Frotten Scores 6 to Propel Saline Past Salem

The Hornets bounced back from Saturday's season-opening loss at Holt.

Cam Frotten scored six goals to lift to a 13-5 victory over Salem in varsity lacrosse action Monday. The Hornets improved to 1-1 on the young season, bouncing back from Saturday’s loss to Holt.

“Salem is a very good team and is coached very well," Saline head coach Matt Ceo said. "We were happy to rebound so well after a very disappointing showing against Holt.

“This game shows that we have a lot of potential," he said. "We just need to start achieving at the level we can.”

Colin Cederna scored twice and added an assist, and Brad Harris found the back of the net twice for the Hornets. Also scoring were Ryan Brown, Trevor Carey and Nick Karapas.

Austin Burd, playing his first game of the season while recovering from a foot injury, made eight saves for the Hornets.

Ceo said assistant coaches Jim Bianchi and Ryan Crawford worked with Frotten at Sunday’s walk-through.

“We told Cam that our attack should match up well when we are one-on-one with their defense, and Cam took it the rest of the way. He's a very coachable young man, is going to do great things for us this year,” Ceo said.

The coach also credited Harris as being instrumental in directing the attack.

Defensively, the Hornets shut down Salem for almost three quarters. Ceo measured the team’s defensive successes in team ground balls. Saline collected 49 during the game, a stat Ceo said was indicative of the team’s focus and intensity.

“Tyler Sheets was a field general for the defense, making sure that every ground ball was contested,” Ceo said. “Scott Overcashier played very well in a defensive capacity for us as well.”

Ceo noted the play of midfielder Matt Baxter, saying he showed promise and did well with faceoffs.

And the coach credited the work of his seniors.

“The sooner they realize their talent and potential, the more success we'll experience this year,” Ceo said.
