Hornets Have a Field Day but Lose to Huron on the Track

Huron's win gives the River Rats in the inside track to the SEC title.

Saline's girls track and field team went up against one of the state's best team's Tuesday and came up just short, falling 72-65 to Ann Arbor Huron.

Saline struggled to keep up with Huron on the track but enjoyed great success in the field.

The Hornets swept the throwing events, with Emily Everett and Randi Bennett going 1-2. Everett won the discuss with a throw of 113 feet, eight inches. Bennett took the shot put, throwing 35 feet, 4.5 inches..Rachel Paxton cleared 5 feet and Sammy Richart went 4'10 as the Hornets went 1-2 in the high jump. Wendy Szuminski jumped 14 feet, 9.5 inches to win the long jump. Sara Palmerton finished second. Samantha Szuminski was first in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet. Wendy Szuminski was second, clearing 9.6 feet.

But the River Rats were as good on the track as the Hornets were in the field.

Saline did manage to pick up wins in the 3,200 and 400 relays, but otherwise, the River Rats won all of the track events.

"It was a very close meet from beginning to end.  We figured it would be decided by only a few points, and that's how it turned out," said coach Michael Smith. "Huron is currently one the favorites to win the Division I State Meet, and they now are in the driver's seat for the SEC championship since they have beaten both Pioneer and us. We hope to bounce back against Monroe on Thursday and then finish out our dual meet season next Tuesday with a win over Pioneer."
