Lady Hornets Crowned Champs at Mt. Morris Volleyball Tournament
The Saline varsity volleyball team lost its opening match and then went undefeated to win at Mt. Morris Saturday.
The Lady Hornets volleyball were champions at the Mt. Morris Invitation Saturday.
Saline (16-9, 4-1 SEC) went 5-1 on the day and beat host Mt. Morris in the championship, 25-15, 19-25 and 15-11..
“What a great confidence building day for our girls. We were down two players and the team rallied with some great intensity and determination,” said coach Lisa Shea. “Our ball control was good all day.”

The victory in the finals avenged Saline’s only loss of the day, as the Hornets opened pool play by losing to Mt. Morris 20-25 and 17-25. But Saline turned it around with a tough 26-24 and 25-8 win over Cabrini. Saline then won 25-14 and 25-17 over Millington before downing Andover 25-18 and 25-17.
In the semifinals, Saline swept Romulus 25-13 and 25-18.

Marissa Owen had 85 assists and 13 aces. Ani Agbabian (31 kills) and Jessi Markey (23) kills were the big hitters for the Hornets. Jenna DeBest (19 kills, 11 blocks) and Jess Wolma (16 kills 13 blocks) also had big games at the net. Mackenzie Schumborg had 18 kills and Ashley Richard had 35 digs.
“Jessi Markey, Jenna DeBest and Natalie Sheridan all stepped up and delivered big performances for us today Lauren Powell played a part in the offense that she hasn't played all year to help us get things going,” Shea said. “We got some great leadership from our veteran players Marissa Owen, Mackenzie Schumborg and Ani Agbabian."
