Voter participation is crucial to a healthy democracy, and faith organizations can provide crucial nonpartisan support for voters and elections. Yashpreet Singh Matharu, an Ann Arbor area resident, was recently featured on the Voice of Interfaith America podcast as part of the series “Faith in Elections” for his outstanding work as a Community Development Manager at the Sikh Coalition. In the episode, Yashpreet speaks about how he first got involved with the Sikh Coalition through his local work in Michigan for environmental issues. He also shares his work this year helping to get out the vote and expanding voter access for Sikh communities across the US. He set up voter canvassing, phone hotlines for election information, and voter outreach tables at gurdwaras and community events. Yashpreet also used the Faith in Elections Playbook, a national resource to help faith communities support free and fair elections in the US. He also speaks about the Sikh Coalition’s interfaith organizing and his advocacy partnering with other faith groups to improve religious literacy and promote religious freedom.
