Monroe Sheriff's Deputy Arrests 2 People In Connection With Break-Ins

Police say the men have confessed to 20 break-ins and that they are suspected of being involved in many more.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that two men arrested at 3 a.m. Wednesday morning have confessed to at least 20 break-ins in Monroe County since Dec. 16.

The department’s detective bureau and Citizen Assistance Responders Division had been investigating a series of reported break-ins throughout Milan, Summerfield, Dundee and Exeter townships. The reports were of items stolen primarily from detached garages and pole barns, where generators and power tools were stolen. A suspect vehicle was described and an alert was put out to area agencies.

At 3 a.m. Wednesday, Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Ellington was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle matching the description. During a traffic stop, he located suspected stolen property from two recent break-ins along with tools that could be used for breaking into buildings.

The driver, a 38-year-old Romulus man, and passenger, a 38-year-old Woodhaven man, were arrested and taken to the detective’s bureau.

According to the report issued by the sheriff’s office, the suspects confessed to a string of burglaries. The report also said that the two men are believed to be responsible for additional break-ins in Wayne, Washtenaw and Lenawee counties and as far away as Lansing. Investigators are working with those agencies in those areas to determine other crimes.

The suspects are being held at the Monroe County Jail on charges of breaking and entering and possession of breaking and entering tools. The names of the suspects are being withheld until arraignment in Monroe County District Court.
