Saline Area Schools has recalled 28 of the 68 teachers who received layoff notices just over a week ago. That leaves 40 staff on layoff notice for the 2011-12 school year.
More teachers should be called back by June 10, when the district finishes its staff assignments for next year. Superintendent Scot Graden said the district still plans to lay off the equivalent of 18-20 full-time teachers as part of a plan to balance the budget for 2011-12.
Even with the layoffs, $1.5 million in concessions from the teachers’ union, and a reduction in the funding cuts from Lansing, Saline Area Schools is facing a $3 million deficit. The district hopes to adopt a balanced budget at its June 28 board of education meeting. The public could get a better look at the plans for next year June 14 when the board looks at a proposed budget.
