Saline's Volleyball Team Drops Five at Tough Portage Central Tournament
Saline was winless in its first outing of the season, but Coach Shea saw reason to be optimistic.
The Lady Hornets opened their volleyball season at the Portage Central Invitational Saturday, dropping five matches.
Saline fell to Farmington Hills Mercy (16-25 and 9-25), Portage Central (15-25 and 24-26), Livonia Ladywood (22-25, 30-29 and 7-15), Bedford (15-25 and 8-25) and Grand Rapids South Christian (23-25 and 19-25).
Coach Lisa Shea said the tournament was a good measuring stick for the Hornets.

“This was a great tournament to see where we stand with the top teams in the state,” Shea said. “Clearly, we have a lot to work on, but I saw a lot of things that make me very optimistic for a successful season.”
Junior Mackenzie Shand led the Hornets with 30 kills, 12 blocks and 26 digs. Sophomore Ani Agbabian had 22 kills, 24 digs and eight aces. Senior Mackenzie Schumborg landed 15 kills and had 18 digs. Sophomore Jess Wolma had 14 kills and eight blocks. Sophomore Taylor Whitling had 62 helpers and 22 digs. Junior Lauren Powell added 18 digs.
