Six Hornets Return from Rockford as All-State Medalists

The 4-x-800 relay team had the best finish, placing fourth in the state.

The boys track and field team finished a terrific season in fine form, as six Hornets came back from the June 4 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 1 track and field championship meet with all-state medals.

The 4-x-800 relay team of Jonathan Parker, Andrew Barnett, Spencer Bishop and Matt Elms finished fourth in their event to bring home medals. The team completed the race in 7:55.24. Elms ran the fastest leg in 1:56.4.

Pole vaulter Rocky Schilke finished seventh to earn all-state honors. Schilke cleared 14 feet, 4 inches to set a new Saline High School record.

“It was a long and hot day on the track,” said coach Al Leslie. “The all-state 4-x-800 team finished well and set a personal record. The experience gained this season at the state meet should prepare us for a better finish next year.”

Distance runner Nick Renberg completed the 3,200-meter run in to take sixth place and win a medal.

As a team, the Hornets finished 16th.

In other events, Garrick Roemer ran in the 200 and 400 dashes. He placed 11th in the 500, finishing in 50.75. Roemer was 18th in the 200, finishing in 22.85.

The 4-x-400 relay team of Matt Goeman, Roemer, Mitch Osadchuk and Elms also ran, finishing in 4:28.8. Steven Bastien competed in long jump, recording a leap of 19 feet, 4 3/4 inches.
