VIDEOSTORY: Jazz Figure Shares Knowledge with Saline High School Musicians
Marcus Belgrave, in concert at the Stone Arch and Events Thursday, made a special stop at Saline High School Wednesday.
Members of the Jazz Band learned from one of the best in a special after-school lesson Wednesday.
Marcus Belgrave, in town for a at the Thursday night, stopped by the band room to share a little of what he's learned in his life in the jazz world. The 74-year-old Belgrave wowed the class with an impressive display of circular breathing, holding a note for over a minute with ease. He talked about scales, and styles, and making the instrument sing. Belgrave talked about his early days, and how he started playing on his dad's bugle, and how his father taught him about the importance of practice. He noted that he still practices first thing in the morning, right after brushing his teeth. Belgrave complimented the skill and talent in the Saline band and urged the young musicians to play without fear.
Patch.com has two video features from the event. The first is a news story from the event. The second video features the band, joined by Belgrave, playing Chicago.
