Police Shoot, Kill Armed Man Experiencing Mental Health Episode In Metro Detroit: Cops

Police said officers were forced to shoot the man when he pointed a gun at them.

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI — Officers fatally shot an armed man who was having a mental health episode Wednesday in Macomb County, according to police.

The shooting happened at 3:30 p.m. in the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive near Ryan Road in Sterling Heights, according to police.

Officers were called to the home to check on a man who was possibly suicidal, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found the man holding a loaded handgun and experiencing a mental health episode, according to police.

Police said negotiators talked to the man for over an hour before he pointed the gun at the officers. That's when police said officers were forced to shoot the man in order to protect everyone else at the scene.

Police said the man died at the scene. There were no other injuries.

The investigation has been turned over to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office. The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation plays out, as required by the department's policy.
