Jefferson Middle School Evacuated Due To Gas Scare

St. Clair Shores Fire Department officials think someone spilled gas in the area, sparking the smell to waft into Jefferson Middle School.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — A gas scare forced an evacuation at Jefferson Middle School early this morning.

The school, located at 27900 Rockwood St., is home to hundreds of students in grades 6 through 8. The whole building was evacuated as a precaution due to the smell of gas in the area, according to officials at the St. Clair Shores Fire Department. Officials think someone possibly spilled gas in that area, sparking the strong smell to waft into the school.

Battalion Chief Matt Witt told Patch, "A little bit [gas odor] drifted in." However, the fire department did a sweep of the school, and Witt reports the verdict is "Totally safe. Everything is fine. We went through with gas detectors and the readings came in at zero."
