Macomb County Cities Opting Out Of Recreational Marijuana Sales

MACOMB COUNTY, MI -- Now that Michigan voters have decided to approve recreational marijuana through the November ballot, cities across the state are making decisions on whether or not to allow such facilities within their communities.

Many have already voted and notified the state that they are opting out -- some for the time being while city officials do more research, others firm in the stance that it sends a bad signal to local youth or unwanted business.

Below is a list of municipalities in your county who have notified LARA that they have opted out of the licensed facilities portion of the MRTMA as of Feb. 22.

Municipalities that do decide to opt out are encouraged to notify LARA, but are not required to do so.

Other cities may have opted out but are not on the list. Since the last update, more than 60 communities have reportedly been added to the list.

In Macomb County, there are almost a dozen cities that have opted out so far:

• Chesterfield Township
• Harrison Charter Township
• Ray Township
• Richmond
• Richmond Township
• Shelby Charter Township
• St. Clair Shores
• Sterling Heights
• Washington Charter Township

Recreational marijuana became legal in Michigan on Dec. 6, but sales have not yet started and aren't likely to start until late next year at the earliest.
