Mystery Donor Drops Rare Coin Into Salvation Army Kettle In Macomb Co.

The donation makes it 11 years in a row the rare coin has been put into a red kettle in Macomb County​, officials said.​

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — Someone dropped a rare coin worth thousands into a Salvation Army red kettle outside a Macomb County Kroger over the weekend, according to a news release.

The mystery donor dropped the South African gold Krugerrand into a red kettle at the Kroger store located at 22801 Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores, officials said.

According to Monex, the Krugerrand is worth roughly $2,031. The donation makes it 11 years in a row a Krugerrand has been put into a red kettle in Macomb County, officials said.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit aims to raise $7.9 million this holiday season, as part of its 2023 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.

Over the past year, the Salvation Army provided "more than 2.4 million meals, more than 530,000 nights of shelter, nearly 56,000 Christmas toys and gifts for children and seniors, resolution of nearly 1,500 legal issues through the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic," officials said.
