Roseville Mauling Victim's Condition Upgraded

A Roseville woman mauled Sunday has improved to good condition.

ROSEVILLE, MI β€” A 52-year-old Roseville woman mauled Sunday by her son’s dog has been upgraded from critical condition to good condition. Her husband, 51, is in serious condition and has undergone surgery to repair damage to his arms, according to Roseville Police Chief James Berlin.

The dog involved in the attack β€” the second on the couple within the past few weeks by the same animal β€” was euthanized Monday afternoon, police said. Tissue samples from the dog were sent for analysis to ensure the animal didn’t have any communicable diseases. Police plan to interview the 28-year-old man who owned the dog Tuesday, the Detroit News reported.

The mauling, which police have said was one of the worst ever seen in Roseville, occurred at about 9 p.m. The couple had been out and when they returned home, let the dog out of its crate. Police believe the dog then immediately attacked the woman without provocation.

Her husband came to her aid, the News reported. The dog then turned on the man and mauled him severely. Berlin said the case will be presented to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office for review and to determine whether charges will be filed against the dog's owner.

The woman's 28-year-old son, who lives at the Normal Street home, owned the 1-year-old male dog believed to have been involved in both attacks, the Detroit Free Press reported. Berlin said the son was cited in Roseville District Court for harboring a vicious animal and failure to license his dog, both misdemeanors, after the incident two weeks ago, the newspaper reported.

The son didn't do anything or get rid of the dog, Berlin said, adding that the son wasn't home during either attack. He did not know how long the son had been living in the home, the Free Press reported. The mauling took place at the family home in the 30000 block of Normal Street, south of 13 Mile and east of Utica Road, in Roseville.
