South African Writer Told Students to 'Realize Your Dreams'

Mark Mathabane shared his story of growing up under apartheid when he visited South Lake High School in 2011.

Two years ago, students at South Lake High School received a first-hand account from Mark Mathabane.

A South African writer and author of the book Kaffir Boy, Mathabane visited the St. Clair Shores school in 2011 and told students his story of growing up under apartheid in the ghettos in South Africa.

He also shared stories of brutal police raids, poverty and his mother's determination to help him succeed.

"You have the opportunity to realize your dreams," he told the students. "The opportunity starts here (at South Lake)."
