Sting Nets Suspected Sexual Predator

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — A sting operation by the Macomb Area Computer Enforcement unit netted a Fraser man attempting to arrange for sex with a 15-year-old girl on Wednesday, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

Nicholas Aubert was arrested after showing up at an undisclosed location with a box of condoms in his car. He was arraigned Thursday on multiple felony charges at 41-B District Court in Clinton Township and could face as long as 14 years in jail, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A Macomb County mother alerted deputies about Aubert on Dec. 1. She said her 15-year-old daughter met him via social media and that she was concerned that he was attempting to have a sexual encounter with her daughter, reports said.

The Sheriff’s Office informed MACE about the incident and the unit set up the sting for Wednesday. Reports said Aubert was taken into custody without incident.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said parents need to stay vigilant when it comes to social media. “Talk with your children about the dangers of the internet and risks of putting personal information onto the world wide web,” he said. “Make them aware that strangers do not always have good intentions and that profiles are not always honest.”

Aubert is charged with one count of children – accosting for immoral purposes, a four-year felony, and one count of computers – internet – communicating with another to commit crime, a 10-year felony. Aubert was given a $10,000 personal bond.

The sheriff’s office said if Aubert posts bail he will be tethered and confined to home. He will be back in court on Dec. 20 for a probable cause conference.
