Prosecutors said Wade was recklessly driving in the area when she crashed her SUV directly into the bedroom of a home where the girl and her 22-month-old sister were sleeping. The younger sister was not injured in the crash, prosecutors said.

Wade fled the scene after the crash, but was quickly arrested not far from the crash site, prosecutors said.

"This could have been worse than what it already is for this family!" Macomb County Peter Lucido said. "Reckless driving, or drunk driving, crashing into residences and then fleeing from law enforcement will not be tolerated in Macomb County! We are committed to pursuing justice swiftly for this family and to the full extent of the law without exception."

Family members identified the injured girl as 9-year-old Laila in a GoFundMe page. They said she sustained spinal injuries, a fractured nose and a lacerated liver.

In a Wednesday morning update, they said Laila is recovering and continuing to improve.

"Each day brings new improvements, and we are so heartened by the positive strides she is making," family members said. "We are truly overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support Laila and our family have received during this challenging time."
