“Of all people in the parking lot, why did you pick a pregnant chick?” Kristen Thompson, 22, recently told Flint Journal/MLive. “I guess he didn’t think I’d fight back. He was wrong.”

The woman was loading groceries into her car on Flint’s east side at around 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, when Mark Newton, 30, allegedly took and ran off with her purse, according to reports.

Thompson then chased and confronted Newton, who shoved Thompson down before fleeing, the report stated. Jacob Owenby, 20, and Thompson’s brother, heard about the attack from a friend and went with his parents to the scene, Thompson told the Flint Journal.

After driving around looking for Newton, Owenby found him, “knocked him out” and held them for about 25 minutes until police arrived, the report stated.

“She defended me, fought my battles when I was little, so I had to have her back,” Owenby told the Flint Journal.

Thompson, who began having contractions after the purse-snatching, was taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center for an emergency C-section that night, giving birth to a boy, Joseph Allan Alexander-Thompson, the report stated.

Newton is being held on an $8,000 bond for unarmed robbery, the report stated, adding that his preliminary exam in Flint District Court is scheduled for Wednesday.
