An upcoming episode of "Extreme Makeover: Weightloss Edition" on July 23 features the first group chosen for the show, including the big reveal of Trina Miller's weight-loss results.

Miller, 47, of Grosse Ile, worked with the show's trainer Chris Powell and six of her fellow nurses at Oakwood Hospital to shed the pounds at Hines Park CrossFit with owner and coach Dave Finlay.

"It's been amazing to have his opportunity to change my life," she said.

When Miller was chosen to be on the show, she thought to ask if some of her colleagues could join her on the year-long journey.

"There is strength in numbers," she said.

All of the nurses set a goal and made a commitment for the year, said Oakwood spokesperson Paula Rivera-Kerr. She said nurses always put others needs before their own, so everyone at Oakwood was proud to support the team.

"They were all part of the reveal and part of the final weigh in," she said.

The nurses now work out together at least three times a week in Northville and at Plymouth CrossFit with Finlay. Others who weren't on the show, whether colleagues or community members, are attracted by the group's camaraderie and join the nurses for their workouts.

"We want to take down all of the barriers of getting to the gym," Finlay said.

Motivation is a big barrier and a reason for why working out in groups does well. The nurses would text each other daily to encourage and keep tabs on each other's progress during the training for the show, Rivera-Kerr said.
