Is Whole Foods Coming to Trenton, Woodhaven or Grosse Ile?

Several Trenton and Grosse Ile residents have expressed interest in a Whole Foods store in the greater Trenton area.

The only Whole Foods coming to Michigan is currently being built in Midtown Detroit, according to Woodhaven City Administrator Mark Kibby.

"We've made contact with Whole Foods several times and the answer is the same," Kibby said. "They just aren’t building in the Michigan market right now."

Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch reached out to Whole Foods to find out if the Trenton area would make a good place for a Whole Foods location.

Kate Klotz, a representative of Whole Foods, said the gourmet grocery chain has explored a number of areas in Michigan and is currently experiencing an aggressive growth rate.

"But I am unaware of which areas they (the Whole Foods real estate team) are exploring," Klotz said.

Klotz said the criteria used to decide if an area is right for a Whole Foods is located on the company website, and are as follows:

  • 200,000 people or more in a 20-minute drive time
  • 25,000-50,000 square feet
  • Large number of college-educated residents
  • Abundant parking available for our exclusive use
  • Stand alone preferred, would consider complementary
  • Easy access from roadways, lighted intersection
  • Excellent visibility, directly off of the street
  • Must be located in a high traffic area (foot and/or vehicle)

With plenty of residents in surrounding areas, Trenton and Woodhaven seem to be perfect matches for Whole Foods -- perhaps Woodhaven more than Trenton.

"The West Road corridor seems like a great place for one of those stores," Kibby said. "We keep trying. That’s also Mayor Patricia Odettes number once request."

Kibby said combining efforts with Trenton could be a possibility.

"We have a great relationship with Trenton," Kibby said. "What's good for Woodhaven is good for Trenton and what's good for Trenton is good for Woodhaven."

Klotz said residents who wish to take action "can shop our current locations (we occasionally do zip code analysis’ to learn where our customers live) and they can send an email to this address: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/customer-service."
