Stellantis Lays off Hundreds From Wayne Co. Plant As Strike Continues

Hundreds of Stellantis​ were temporarily laid off from a downriver plant due to the ongoing United Auto Workers strike, the automaker said.

TRENTON, MI — Hundreds of Stellantis were temporarily laid off from a downriver plant due to the ongoing United Auto Workers strike, the automaker announced Monday.

The layoffs include 520 workers at Stellantis' Trenton Engine Complex were told not to show up for work Friday because of "storage constraints," according to the automaker.

An additional 50 workers were laid off from the Kokomo Casting plant in Indiana, according to the automaker.

"As a consequence of the UAW strike action at the Toledo Assembly Complex (TAC), Stellantis has a total of 640 represented employees on temporary layoff," Stellantis said in a release. "Stellantis continues to closely monitor the impact of the UAW strike action on our manufacturing operation."

The new round of layoffs come after more than 400 workers at the Livonia Transmission Plant were laid off by Ford Motor Company.

A new economic report shows the United Auto Workers strike against Detroit's Big Three shows has cost the automakers roughly $5.5 billion.

The historic UAW strike against Detroit's Big Three began on Sept. 8 after the union's contract expired without a new one in place. It's the first time ever the union launched a strike against all three automakers at the same time.
