Wayne County officers rescued a dog from icy water Monday afternoon, according to police.

TRENTON, MI — Wayne County officers rescued a dog from icy water Monday afternoon, according to police.
Officers received reports at 5:30 p.m. Monday that a dog was trapped in icy water after falling through the ice in the canal at Elizabeth Park, which is near the Detroit River in the area of Fort Street and West Road in Trenton, according to police.
Trenton Police Cpl. Bond and Officer Bedsun jumped into the icy water, breaking off sections of ice while coordinating efforts from the shallow water, according to police.

After a tense and physically demanding operation, the dog was safely brought to shore and reunited with its owner, according to police.
Deputy Chief Neese from the Trenton Police Department praised the officers who rescued the dog.

"Their quick thinking, teamwork and willingness to put themselves in harms way embody the very essence of public service. Thanks for their bravery, a life was saved today," he said.

Officials urged anyone who sees a person or animal in distress in freezing water to call 911 and avoid putting yourself at risk by attempting a rescue.
