5 Student Conduct Policies that Troy Families Need to Know

With the beginning of a new academic year just weeks away, parents are scrambling to outfit their students with new school clothes and supplies.

To help your transition from summer to school, here are five Troy School District policies you might want to familiarize yourself with prior to the first day of school. Note that these policies are taken from the code of student conduct which was revised in May 2011 and that the page numbers referring to the code items can be referred to on the district's website (PDF).

Here goes:

Dress code: Troy students have the right to "dress and groom in a manner which is appropriate, shows cleanliness, promotes safety and demonstrates respect for themselves and others," but it comes with certain responsibilities spelled out on pages 36-38 of the code of conduct. Also, different buildings may have different rules.

Attendance: Not only are attendance policies measured in the Troy School District, state law also requires students to be in school. The district recommends that families plan their vacations around school vacations (a 2013-14 academic calendar is not currently available on the district's website). Students have the responsibility to make sure that parents verbally notify the school of the student's absence, with special rules for high schoolers (see page 15).

Student Discipline: District students must adhere to a code of conduct. If there are infractions, students are subject to discipline, which could include a suspension or expulsion. What types of behaviors are prohibited? How is discipline dolled out? See pages 34-61.

Student drivers: Not interested in following the rules of the road? Suspension of driving privileges, issuing of parking tickets through the Troy Police Department, towing of vehicles and/or suspension of driving privileges may occur when violations of regulations occur. For all 12 rules that every student driver must know, see page 20.

Technology: Thinking about bringing consumer technology to class? Be careful: the district is not liable for theft, loss, damage, or misuse of any electronic devices brought to school by a student. Other regulations refer to subjects ranging from privacy to respect for the educational environment in Troy. To read all of them, see page 23.
