5 Things to Know in Troy This Week

1. Looking for a way to beat the heat? The Troy Historic Village kicked off "Summer in the Village" on Saturday with extended hours. On Monday through Friday, visit the village between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturdays, hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. "Summer in the Village" continues through Aug. 24.

2. It's clear that Detroit Tigers fever is in the air as the "Bless You Boys" push for the pennant. Come to the Troy Public Library on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., to hear baseball card historian Jeff Kless offer a primer on how to collect cards and even appraise cards you already have. Do not forget to register online. 

3. To supplement critically low blood supplies in the area, the City of Troy is sponsoring city-wide Red Cross blood drives on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at various locations.

The Community Affairs office at City Hall is now scheduling appointments at (248) 524-1147. You may also sign up by visiting redcrossblood.org.  The access code for the site is "troy." Walk-ins are welcome, but a photo ID or Red Cross donor card will be required at the time of donation. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh more than 110 pounds, and be in good general health to donate.

4. Gas is on the way up in the Troy area. According to the AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in Metro Detroit is $3.83 on Monday — up 30 cents from $3.53 last week. Around town, the lowest price you'll find is $3.75 at the Kroger station at 4889 Rochester Road.
