5 Things You Can Do to Be a Better Voter in Troy

How to get an absent voter ballot, where to learn more about the issues and more about the Nov. 5 elections in Troy.

Voters in Troy go to the polls in less than two weeks to elect three City Council members and vote on a bond proposal for the Troy School District.

Here are five things you can do before election day to be a more informed and involved voter:

1. Apply for an absent voter ballot.

If you can't get to your polling place, you can still exercise your right to vote. Troy absentee voter applications are posted online (PDF). If you want the ballot mailed, your application must be received by 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election.

2. Review a sample ballot.

Ballots are posted on michigan.gov and troymi.gov (PDF).

3. Learn about the issues.

The League of Women Voters of Troy Area held its candidates night event prior to the Nov. 5 election earlier this month at Walsh College.

In attendance were candidates Olimpiu Apahidean, Wade Fleming, Steve Gottlieb, Ellen Hodorek and Edward Pennington. Not in attendance were candidates Janice Daniels, Thomas E. Kuhn, Rodger Walters and Scott T. Welborn.

The forum will be shown in Troy on cable channel 18 (Comcast and WOW) on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 4:30 p.m. Go to cmntv.org to check times the forum will be aired or to click on the video on demand link. You can also watch it on youtube.com.

Find information about the bond proposal on troy.k12.mi.us.

4. Get answers to frequently asked questions

The Department of State website has posted detailed information on what to do if you've lost your voter registration card, how to determine your precinct, what you can and can't bring to the polls with you and more.

Election Day is Nov. 5. The polls open will 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

5. Write a letter to the editor.

Tell your friends and neighbors who you support in the city council races or how you feel about the school bond proposal. Letters can be posted directly to our Speak Out Conversation board. Just click in the "What do you want to share?" box and start typing!
