Lean Cuisine On The Menu At Troy's Jail

The Troy Police Department negotiates with a local grocer to get the best deal on the frozen dinners.

TROY, MI. — While getting arrested and put in jail is never a fun experience, the accused can at least count on a “good meal” in Troy. For about as long as anyone can remember, the definition of good eats while awaiting bail or a trip to the Oakland County jail from Troy involves Lean Cuisine frozen dinners.

Troy Police took to Twitter early Tuesday morning to remind everyone of its gourmet chow:

“I’ve never heard anyone really complaining about it,” said Troy Police Sgt. Meghan Lehman. “It’s better than the food in most lockups.”

The department negotiates with a local grocery store go get the most competitive pricing on the frozen dinners. The kind of Lean Cuisines served varies, Lehman said.

“It’s whatever we can get a good deal on,” she said.

Most people are incarcerated for less than 24 hours in the Troy lockup. There are separate cells for men and women and individualized lockups for offenders that have a medical condition or that are being violent. About 50 people can be held at maximum, but Lehman said that number is usually much less.

As far as food, the department doesn’t restrict inmates to just one Lean Cuisine. “We’re not going to withhold food from someone that needs it,” Lehman said.

Besides Lean Cuisine, Pop Tarts are sometimes served for breakfast, she added.
