Oakland County Sheriff: Suspect In March Shooting Arrested

The two victims were shot after trying to meet with the accused in the area of Osmun and Russell, police said.

PONTIAC, MI — A second person has been arrested in connection with the shooting of two Pontiac men in March, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday.

Deputies said Davonte Burkett was taken into custody without incident by the Oakland County Fugitive Apprehension Team, Oakland County SWAT and the Pontiac Directed Patrol Unit while in a residence near the 200 block of South Marshall in Pontiac.

Burkett was arraigned Wednesday before 50th District Court Judge Ronda Fowlkes Gross, police said, and bond was denied. Burkett will appear in court again Friday, May 7, according to police. Burkett's co-defendant, Delorean Jones, was arrested March 23 and arraigned three days later, police said.

The first victim, later identified as Marquis Myles, 23, of Pontiac, died from his wounds, police said.

Police said the second victim, a 22-year-old Pontiac man whose name has not been released, told detectives he and Myles went to the area of Osmun and Russell to meet with two people. However, the individuals they were going to meet approached their vehicle, opened the back doors and began shooting inside, police said.

The surviving victim, who was the driver, drove away as the shooting continued, police said. When he realized Myles had been severely injured, he drove to the hospital for treatment, police said.

Through several leads, police identified Jones and Burkett as the suspects, police said. Both are currently on parole from the Michigan Department of Corrections, police said.

Jones has a criminal history which includes drug charges and armed robbery, according to police. Burkett has a criminal history which includes three counts of carrying a concealed weapon, discharging a firearm into a building and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, police said.
