Replay: Troy City Council Discusses Hiring New City Manager

City Council met at 5 p.m. Wednesday to discuss how to replace City Manager John Szerlag, who recently accepted a position with Cape Coral, FL.

UPDATE: Troy City Council did not appoint an interim city manager at Wednesday's meeting, but voted instead to meet again at 6 p.m. Monday to interview candidates Gary Shripka and Mike Culpepper. Council also asked for proposals from several firms that would help locate the next long-term city manager. Former Troy City Manager Frank Gerstenecker also volunteered to help with the search for the next city manager of Troy.

As City Manager John Szerlag , Troy City Council is planning to meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday to discuss and possibly select an acting city manager while also considering search criteria and methodology for a permanent replacement.

In a letter from Szerlag to Troy City Council, he names three individuals he says are qualified to serve as Acting City Manager:

  • Mark Miller, current Director of Economic and Community Development for the City of Troy
  • Gary Shripka, retired Assistant City Manager of Troy
  • Mike Culpepper, retired City Manager of Auburn Hills

Szerlag also attached a list of interim city managers from the Michigan Municipal League website; he estimates the hourly rate for an acting city manager is "in the range of $50 to $100 per hour," according to the letter.
